    5 Grilled Sweet Potato Casserole

When Thanksgiving rolls around, it’s the perfect time to step up your grilling game and show some muscle here.

The best part of this recipe is you are going to look like a lifesaver standing outside making one of the most important sides to hit the table.

Yet, for you, it’s time away from the craziness of the kitchen. Granted, this will only take 30-45 minutes, but there are always ways to DRAG this out even longer. 😀😀

The best part is if you are grilling or spatchcocking a full bird or smoking turkey breasts or thighs this year, you can make this out on the grill in the time that the turkey is removed, tented and resting for perfect timing.

Simple Ingredients for Delicious Grilled Side Dish

Sweet Potato | We like to use the sweet potatoes from the grill but you can bake these in the oven.

Great Grains Cereal | If you haven’t used this cereal before, you are missing out and I’m so glad you are making this recipe. This cereal is adding so much crunchy goodness. The raisins, oats, dates and pecans are all packed together so you don’t have to go out and buy each item. You can always add in extra brown sugar or nuts, if desired. We used the Crunchy Pecan version but the Cranberry Almond Crunch would work great here as well.

    🔥 Instructions

six instructional photos showing how to mix the potatoes, add eggs and flavorings, pouring into a disposable pan, topping and grilling.
Simple Instructions and Very Easy Grilling!

Step One: Heat the grill to 350-375 degrees over indirect heat.

Step Two: Combine the brown sugar, cinnamon, salt, cloves, nutmeg and orange juice into a bowl and stir. Combine that mixture with the mashed sweet potatoes and eggs and stir well.

Step Three: Pour the sweet potato mixture into an aluminum pan that is sprayed with non stick spray. Sprinkle with the Great Grains Cereal and pecans, if choosing to do so.

Step Four: Place the casserole over the grill and cook for 30-45 minutes or until golden brown.

    ❗ Expert Tips

Use a disposable pan. Who wants to add more dishes to a busy and hectic day?

Divide up the sweet potato mixture and make ½ with the cereal mixture and ½ with the hold fashioned classic brown sugar/pecans.

Watch the heat as you don’t want this to burn. Take note that we did grill this on INDIRECT for that reason. We explain all of that here if you haven’t specifically used indirect heat before.

If you don’t want to cook the sweet potatoes out on the grill, consider baking them the day before and putting them in the refrigerator until you are ready to mix them up. It is just a quick way to take more stress off of the day.

Add a bit of orange zest or a bit of crushed pineapples to give it a bit of tropical flair.

    Recipe FAQ

Do I have to use eggs?

The eggs are used to stiffen it up and hold the mixture together. It also helps it become lighter than being a dense blob of sweet potatoes.

Are sweet potatoes and yams the same thing?

Nope. The sweet potatoes are golden orange and taper at the ends. The yams are white and cylindrical. Sweet potatoes taste sweet and yams are dry and have a lot more starch in them.

Why does my sweet potato casserole seem soupy or more liquid?

You most likely overcooked the sweet potatoes. Make sure to check them often when you are cooking them to ensure they are just done and not too soft.

My sweet potato casserole is super sweet to me, how can I fix that?

Since sweet potato casserole is supposed to be a savory dish, it’s tough to make sure it is not too sweet. If your version is a little too much on the sweet side, add a little bit of sour cream or buttermilk to cut it down. If you think it might be too sweet to begin with, cut out the brown sugar or only use ½ of it. It’s much easier to ADD then take out.

    Equipment

    • Grill
    • Disposable Pan

    Ingredients

    Sweet Potato Casserole

    • 4 Sweet Potatoes cooked and mashed
    • 2 Eggs
    • ¼ cup Brown Sugar
    • ½ cup Orange Juice
    • ½ tsp Cinnamon
    • ½ tsp Salt
    • ¼ tsp Ground Cloves
    • ¼ tsp Nutmeg

    Topping

    • 1 cup Great Grains Cereal
    • ½ cup Pecans chopped, optional

    Instructions

    • Heat grill to 350-375 degrees over indirect heat.
    • Combine the brown sugar, cinnamon, salt, cloves, nutmeg and orange juice into a bowl and stir. Combine that mixture with the mashed sweet potatoes and eggs and stir well.
    • Pour the sweet potato mixture into an aluminum pan that is sprayed with non stick spray. Sprinkle with the Great Grains Cereal and pecans, if choosing to do so.
    • Place the casserole over the grill and cook for 30-45 minutes or until golden brown.

    Notes

Doneness: The key to doneness on this is to make sure that the eggs have completely cooked in the mixture which should take 30 minutes. This is hard to detect otherwise as it is mixed in with the mash and it’s all liquified. Use 30 minutes minute as the gauge this time.
Eggs: Sometimes sweet potato casseroles don’t call for eggs but they are a great binder and hold the mash together nicely. You can leave them out and the mixture will be more soft.
Meal Prep: This is 100% ready to meal prep. 1. Make the sweet potatoes early and then allow them to cool. Make the sweet potato casserole hours later and it should only take about 5 minutes to prep and get on the on the grill. 2. Make the entire sweet potato portion early and put in the refrigerator the NIGHT BEFORE MINUS THE TOPPING. If you put the topping on, it will get soggy and it will lose all the reason it’s there to begin with. When ready to grill, remove from the refrigerator about 20-30 minutes before putting on the grill to allow to come to room temperature. Right before it’s time to go on the grill, sprinkle on the topping and put on the hot 350-375 degree grill.
Substitutions: Feel free to substitute 2 cans of sweet potatoes for the fresh version. Choose to leave out the orange juice and add milk instead. Change up the spices to your liking. Topping changes are endless. Add in Craisins to the Great Grains mix. Make a batch of candied almonds or pecans instead of the cereal. Keep the recipe the same and add marshmallows at the end and make a gooey topping.
Pan Choices: We like to use disposable pans when making things like this that can stick or when we are entertaining during the holidays. It’s just one less thing to worry about. This recipe can be done in a cast iron on the grill though.
Liquid Casserole: You most likely overcooked the sweet potatoes. Make sure to check them often when you are cooking them to ensure they are just done and not too soft.
Too Sweet: Since sweet potato casserole is suppose to be a savory dish, it’s tough to make sure it is not too sweet and sticks to the savory side.  If your version is a little too much on the sweet side, add a little bit of sour cream or buttermilk to cut it down. If you think it might be too sweet to begin with, cut out the brown sugar or only use ½ of it. It’s much easier to ADD then take out.
Make Two Versions: Divide up the sweet potato mixture and make ½ with the cereal mixture and ½ with the hold fashioned classic brown sugar/pecans or marshmallows.
