These warm Grilled Apples are made in about ten minutes and are served with whipped cream and a bit of almond slivers. A hint of cardamom takes this over the top, and you’ll feel like you’re eating a dessert from a high-end restaurant!

    5 Grilled Apple Slices

Our local farmer’s market had a fresh batch of organic Gala Apples and I knew it was time to start using these on the grill. They were so sweet and crisp that I knew they’d make a phenomenal dessert, and I was right!

This is one of those simple recipes that gets a serious upgrade from the grill. Sure, they would definitely taste good if you cook them in pan on the stovetop, but this way they taste fabulous!

    🍎 Ingredients

Easy Ingredients For the Apple Coating

Gala Apples – This cultivar is sweet and firm and available year round in most grocery stores.  It has hints of florals and is usually a bit smaller than the popular Red Delicious. They slice wonderfully, and it was easy to remove the seeds from the core.

Cardamom – This is the “secret” ingredient that adds a wonderfully complex flavor to these apples.  A little goes a long way, so I only used 1/4 of a teaspoon. It’s a rich and exotic flavor which I now intend to use more often.

    🔥 Instructions

several process photos showing how to prepare apples for the grill, adding butter, coating with a brown sugar mix and serving.
Simple Instructions for a Delicious Grilled Dessert

Step One: Wash and clean three or four Gala Apples. I recommend using organic fruits as so much of the chemicals used in orchards remain in the skin of the apples.  The organic varieties aren’t typically as pretty, but I’d rather eliminate the chemicals when I can.

coring the apples with a small pairing knife and cut apples on a cutting board.
Carefully Slice and Core the Apples

Step Two: Cut the apples into quarters and use a paring knife to carefully remove the core and seeds.

pouring a little butter over the sliced apples to minimize sticking on the grill.
Add Melted Butter to Minimize Sticking on the Grill

Step Three: Melt some butter and toss the sliced apples to coat well. The butter not only adds some flavor, but it minimizes the risk of the apples sticking to the grill.

Step Four: In another small bowl, mix the brown sugar and cardamom together.  Wait until the apples are off the grill before adding in the melted butter.

Step Five: Set up the grill for 375 degrees on direct heat.

Note: I used my all-time favorite grilling tool, the GrillGrate, to create these amazing sear marks.  In addition to providing a gorgeous grilled apple, the valleys in the GrillGrate stop the butter from dripping down into the coals.  That eliminates the chance of unwanted flare ups.

So Easy to Prepare these Apples on the Grill!

Step Six: Add the apples to the grill and let them sear for about three minutes.

Step Seven: Turn the apples over and allow the other side to grill for another two to three minutes.

Step Eight: Remove the apples from the grill. Add the melted butter to the brown sugar and cardamom and pour it over the apples. Use a wooden spoon to mix it together.

Top is with fresh whipped cream and a sprinkling of almond slices.

    💡 Recipe Tips

These apples grill so fast that it is easy to put them on right before dinner for a phenomenal dessert. Who doesn’t love topping these with whipped cream and serving in a bowl for a fun dessert?

I prefer to eat these warm, right off the grill, but they do store well for a couple of days in the refrigerator in a sealed container. You can serve them cold, but there is just something about eating a warm apple dessert!

    👨‍🍳 Recipe FAQs

What apples do I need to use?

Really, any kind of firm apple will work. Fuji, Gala, Honeycrisp, and Braeburn are all great options. Play around with the apples to see what you like the best.

What should I serve with grilled apple slices?

Anything that you enjoy with apples is going to go great with this dessert. We love whipped topping and nuts. Consider adding plain vanilla ice cream, granola, or warm caramel would be good too.

    How do you store leftovers?

They will last in the fridge for 2-3 days and can be reheated in the microwave or warm them in the oven at 350 for 10 minutes until they are hot.
