I used a simple, balanced homemade dry rub to achieve a crowd-pleasing flavor. My tried-and-true grilling method is simple but guarantees chicken wings that are crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. There will be no leftovers, I promise! If you do, invite me over and I’ll grab them from you!

    🛒 Ingredients

    Simple Ingredients

🐔 Chicken Wings – You’ll want to use 2 pounds of chicken wings for this recipe, which is about 12-16 wings depending on their size. I prefer to buy whole wings and cut them into flats and drumettes myself, but pre-cut wings work just as well. PRO TIP: I cut off the little wing. Nobody eats this and it just takes up space and spices.

Of course, you can easily double or triple this recipe for a larger gathering!

🧂 Dry Rub – You’ll love this simple dry rub made with pantry staples! The red pepper flakes are optional (just in case you need to make this kid-friendly).

Also, feel free to experiment with other types of pepper (like green or red), and herbs and spices like cumin, smoked paprika, thyme, and oregano, for a unique twist.

    • Salt
    • Black Pepper
    • Onion Powder
    • Paprika
    • Garlic Powder
    • Red Pepper Flakes

    🔥 Instructions

    👉Step 1: Preheat the grill to 425°F.

👉Step 2: Measure the dry rub ingredients and mix them well in a small bowl.

👉Step 3: Cut the chicken wings into drums and drummettes, if they’re not pre-cut.

Mix the dry rub and the wings in a large bowl.

👉Step 4: Place the wings in a large bowl or Ziploc bag and add the dry rub. Give them a good massage and make sure the rub is spread evenly.

👉Step 5: Place the wings on the grill and cook for 10 minutes.

👉Step 6: Flip them and cook for another 6-10 minutes. Use an instant-read meat thermometer to make sure the internal temperature of the wings reads 165°F in the thickest part of the meat before removing them from the grill.

Note: To get an accurate read of the wings’ internal temp, make sure the thermometer doesn’t touch the bone.

    ❗ Recipe Tips and Tricks

    Super Juicy & Crispy Wings

💡To achieve extra crispy skin, pat the wings dry using paper towels before seasoning them.

💡Look for hot spots on the grill and rotate the wings so they cook evenly.

💡Let the wings rest for a few minutes before serving to allow the juices to redistribute.

    🧑‍🍳 Storage and Reheating

🍱Storage – Leftover grilled chicken wings can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-4 days.

♨️Reheating – To reheat, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Place the wings on a baking sheet and bake for 10-15 minutes, or until heated through. For extra crispy skin, you can also reheat them in an air fryer at 350°F (175°C) for 5-7 minutes.

    🌶️ Additions and Substitutions

📌Spice It Up – Replace the red pepper flakes (or add on top) with a pinch of cayenne pepper or a dash of your favorite hot sauce.

📌Herbaceous Blend – For a more complex flavor profile, try incorporating dried herbs like oregano, thyme, or rosemary into the dry rub. Fresh herbs like parsley or cilantro can be added as a topping after grilling for a refreshing flavor.

📌Citrus Zest – A little lemon or lime zest adds a refreshing citrusy note that complements the smoky flavor of the grilled wings. Try my homemade Yukatan dry rub if you love citrusy flavors on your wings.

📌Sweet and Savory – For a touch of sweetness, add a teaspoon of brown sugar or honey to the dry rub. This balances the savory spices and creates a delicious caramelization on the wings.

📌Explore Other Rubs – Don’t be afraid to experiment with different spice blends! My all-purpose dry rub is a versatile option that works well with various meats and it’s also easy to customize.

    🧴 Sauce it Up

⭐Hawaiian BBQ Sauce – Add some exotic flavors to the mix with this sweet and tangy sauce perfect for dipping your wings.

⭐Honey Sriracha Sauce – A match made in heaven! The sweetness of honey balances the heat of sriracha, creating a versatile sauce that pairs beautifully with the crispy wings.

⭐Easy Homemade Cherry Bourbon BBQ Sauce – For a more sophisticated twist, this cherry-infused sauce adds a touch of sweetness and a hint of bourbon to your wings.

    • 1 tsp Garlic powder
    • 1 tsp Onion powder
    • ½ tsp Paprika
    • pinch Red Pepper Flakes

    • Heat grill to 425°F. Oil grill grate to prevent chicken wings from sticking.
    • While grill is heating up, cut up the chicken wings into segments, if they aren't already.
    • Combine all the rub ingredients and toss with the chicken wings in a bowl or plastic bag.
