Set the grill to 350°F and use indirect heat. For gas grills, turn off the burners immediately under the sweet potato.
Prepare the Sweet Potatoes for the Grill
Cut a piece of aluminum foil large enough to wrap around the sweet potato.
Spray with a little bit of olive oil to help the skin become crispy.
Sprinkle a pinch of sea salt.
Use a fork to poke a few holes through the skin. Wrap the sweet potato tightly with the foil.
Grill the Baked Sweet Potatoes
Place the foil wrapped potato on the grill.
Grill on indirect heat for approximatley 40 minutes. The sweet potatoes should be fork-tender. Larger potatoes will need additional time.
Notes
Depending on the size of your sweet potato and the temperature of your grill, the sweet potatoes may take a bit longer. Ours take about 40 minutes but we are using a ceramic grill (the Big Green Egg) where the air circulates around evenly. I know some people may have to grill these upwards of one hour. Test on your grill and see how it goes. Optional Toppings: Sprinkling bacon bits, some red pepper flakes or fresh herbs will change up the flavor significantly. My personal favorite is to add whipped butter and candied pecans. The crunchy texture is phenomenal!Alternate Seasonings: I used a simple Sea Salt coating, but consider adding fresh herbs, cayenne pepper, or even some cilantro for a freshness. Be creative!Make the outside crispy by skipping the foil. Placing the whole sweet potato straight on the grill will result in a crispier skin, but watch it closely so it doesn't burn.
