We have a trip to Thailand planned for this summer. Besides being super-excited about visiting this part of the world, we want to see how the Thai version of sriracha differs from what we commonly see in American Thai restaurants. We usually aren’t drawn to spicy foods, but thought we’d try our hand at cooking our own Grilled Honey Sriracha Chicken Recipe.
What is Sriracha Sauce?
Sriracha is a sauce or paste made up of chili peppers, vinegar, sugar and salt that originated in Eastern Thailand. Traditional Thai Sriracha sauce will be hotter and tangier than the Americanized version. Americans love to add mayonnaise to it and use it as a dipping sauce, too.
Grilled Honey Sriracha Chicken
On our quest to try new recipes using sriracha sauce, we decided to incorporate it into a few dishes this summer and see how it goes! We both decided to taste the sriracha sauce first to see how we like it – we aren’t huge fans of super-spicy foods.
It has a little bit of a kick to it but it isn’t overpowering. It has a great flavor and a little bit of heat. Ok, we can play with this!
Our first trial run was a Grilled Honey Sriracha Chicken Recipe and it was fabulous! The honey tames down the heat that you think is going to be there so you are left with a cool sweet and tangy sour combo!
What Kind of Chicken to Use?
I used boneless, skinless chicken breasts for this recipe, but you could easily use chicken thighs or even chicken wings. Jason thinks the sauce would be amazing on wings that you glaze over the top after they are cooked and just get that last little bit over the wings.
Prepare and Cook the Grilled Honey Sriracha Chicken
The marinade consists of sriracha sauce, honey, soy sauce, garlic, ginger and red pepper flakes. Combine these ingredients in a ziplock bag and add the chicken breasts. Let it marinate in the refrigerator for two to three hours.
Prepare the grill by setting it up for direct heat. I use the Big Green Egg, as I think the thick ceramic walls help to cook the chicken more evenly. It seems that our chicken breasts always come out very juicy using the Egg!
Set up the temperature to 350 degrees and place the chicken breasts on the grill. It takes about seven minutes on each side for the internal temperature to reach 165 degrees.
Remove the chicken from the grill and serve with fresh sriracha dipping sauce!
